Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is more than just a reproductive disorder. Recent studies have shed light on its metabolic implications, particularly its strong association with type 2 diabetes. Women with PCOS often exhibit significant insulin resistance, a condition where the body’s cells don’t respond well to insulin, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. This insulin resistance is evident even in those who aren’t obese.
PCOS is a multifaceted disorder with both metabolic and reproductive implications. As research progresses, there’s hope for more targeted and effective treatments, offering relief to millions of affected women worldwide. A functional medicine approach to diagnosis and treatment offers a new promise for practitioners and patients.
Dr Michael Jurgelewicz is a distinguished figure in the realm of functional medicine, with a keen focus on metabolic health, including insulin resistance, diabetes, and PCOS.
