Respected US clinician Dr Michael Jurgelewicz explores the effects of auto-immune disorders on health and well-being. Dr Jurgelewicz discusses an integrated treatment approach for autoimmune and gastrointestinal disorders.

Autoimmunity and gastrointestinal disorders have become an increasing epidemic. There are many different autoimmune diseases within all specialties, and all of these are looked at differently; however, they all have the same common triggers. Therefore, we can take a similar approach to treat all auto-immune disorders. If we know what causes the immune system to attack itself and we know some of the triggers that cause a malfunction in the immune system, we can successfully treat these conditions.

Dr Jurgelewicz discusses an integrated treatment approach for autoimmune and gastrointestinal disorders with personal case studies.

Key concepts and treatments for a functional medicine approach to autoimmune disorders:

  • Identify environmental triggers that contribute to autoimmunity
  • Recognize the role of clinical laboratory testing to assess autoimmune dysfunction
  • Determine dietary interventions and nutritional therapeutics for patients presenting with autoimmune disorders

The clinician’s detective work behind aberrant immune responses

Dr Jurgelewicz explains the environmental triggers that contribute to these auto-immune conditions and how to assess overall gastrointestinal health by comprehensive molecular evaluation of the gut microbiome, gut inflammation, mucosal immunity, and digestive function. This includes an assessment of bacteria, protozoal, viral pathogens, opportunistic, and beneficial organisms.

Every Person is Metabolically Unique.
Shouldn’t Their Treatment be as Well?

“Many healthcare practitioners are trained to look only in specific places for the answers, using the same familiar labs or diagnostic tests, however, many causes of chronic illness are not typically found in these places. The usual tests do not look for food sensitivities, hidden infections, environmental toxins, mould exposures, nutritional deficiencies, dysbiosis, intestinal permeability and metabolic imbalances.

Specialised laboratory testing helps to identify the underlying causes of chronic disease and provides support to patients to promote optimal health.
