MSM, a powerful ally for gut health

MSM is a naturally occurring organosulfur compound with broad biological effects. MSM is naturally found in fruits, vegetables, grains, and milk and is an oxidation product of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and a source of sulfur for producing the amino acids methionine and cysteine.

MSM is rapidly absorbed and easily penetrates membranes and permeates throughout the body. Research shows us that MSM operates at the transcriptional and cellular levels having a profound effect on inflammation and oxidative stress.

Inflammation reduction with MSM

MSM plays a big role in reducing inflammation. It is shown to inhibit NF-kB resulting in the downregulation of interleukin-1 (IL-1) and IL-6 and also downregulating tumour necrosis factor-alpha ɑ (TNFa) which are signalling proteins linked to systemic inflammation

MSM may have a role to play in the downregulation of allergies via its ability to reduce inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase -2 (COX-2) leading to a reduction of Nitric oxide (NO). This reduction in NO has an inhibitory effect on mast cells which is involved in histamine release.

Sulfur compounds for immune system health

Sulfur compounds such as MSM play important roles in the health of your immune system, MSM may be effective in reducing oxidative stress and inflammation that can weaken immunity. Since it’s effective in reducing levels of inflammatory compounds like IL-6 and TNF-ɑ, MSM may reduce stress on your immune system. Add to this, MSM helps to increase glutathione levels further supporting your immune system.

MSM for digestive health

When we are talking about gut health, MSM may assist in rebuilding the lining of the digestive tract and lower inflammation/allergic reactions to certain foods. It’s also useful for healing leaky gut syndrome since MSM improves the permeability and the absorption capabilities of the cells in your intestinal tract.

So what does all this mean? It means that MSM is a great choice for gut health, it will assist by reducing inflammation and by supporting the immune system, particularly when there is oxidative stress involved.
